Independence wala Rakhi
Tradition of 'Raksha Bandhan' had begun when Draupadi tied Rakhi to Lord Krishna, for which Lord Krishna stood beside to protect her. Power of such Rakhi helped Pandavas to win war of Kurukshetra. In 20th century, Rabindranath Tagore made it as a custom in Bengal where not Hindus alone, people from all religions came together to celebrate Rakhi Mahotsav. Even today this is followed which has contributed India to be the largest Secular Nation in the world.
Although time has changed from vedic era to e-rakhi era, but the power of Rakhi and bonding thus obtained from it hasn’t. In our school Bharatiya Vidya Kendram (BVK) in convention with RSS has a tradition of celebrating 'Raksha Bandhan' irrespective of religion and gender just like in Bengal. I have immense respect and belief in that, man or woman / boy or girl / elder or younger / sibling or non-sibling whoever it is, a protector deserves a Rakhi.
A Protector besides loving should also respect the fundamental right to freedom of protectee. Protection shouldn’t curtail the individual independence. Sometimes too much protection lead to souring of relations. Someone rightly said, 'too much of anything is injurious to health', it may be insecurity, expectations, possessiveness, fear and hatred. There are situations like best friend turning down to enemy and people getting separated which are caused by any of these excess emotions. I am not emphasizing only because of them but they might.
And this year 'Raksha Bandhan' and Independence day are falling together, definitely it should make a difference in the spirit of celebrations. Setting standards to new levels of belief system. Taking oath to be a protector without actually compromising on individual independence. Embracing everyone to let go the bitter past and un-limit the future endeavors together.
'Raksha bandhan' never completes without a gift. Gifts need not be monetary and we must seize every opportunity to celebrate our small joys. What if we gifted trust in return to a Rakhi. Hence showing trust, gratitude, love and compassion promotes pro-social behavior and improves interpersonal relationships.
To my parents, cousins and all my friends, I wish you and abide myself for an Independence Wala Raksha Bandhan.
